Contemplative Practices for Creative Writing, The Porch, Nashville, TN

In Soul Feast, Marjorie J. Thompson asserts that “perhaps our real task in prayer is to attune ourselves to the conversation already going on deep in our hearts.” Something similar might be said for our writing as well. While for many, the outward structures of religion seem outmoded, perhaps for our writing, the contemplative practices of spirituality might empower us to tap into this “conversation already going on deep in our hearts.”

In this generative workshop, intended for writers of all levels and genres, we will explore the ways that contemplative practices might nurture our writing. From lectio divina to centering prayer, we will utilize spiritual practices as jumping-off points for writing, and for those group members willing to do so, we will share with one another the fruits of our explorations.
